Wristwatches in a Digital generation

As many of you know, I happen to be a bit of a watch nut. My Dad has always appreciated good watches, therefore I have always appreciated good watches, whether I needed one or not. As I became more interested in them, I started to appreciate their story, their complication and their design. The New York Times has a feature on some friends that share the same view on this, and I’m sure we’re not alone.

Catch the article here and let us know in the comments what’s on your wrist, and a line or two on why you wear it.

Bamford Watch Department

We have been talking about Bamford for a few years now, but I had a chance to catch up with George Bamford and Simon Chambers a few months ago in LA over coffee, and they were nice enough to bring along some of their latest pieces. The guys have be collaborating with some of the icons of the lifestyle segment, most notably of which is Fragment Design, headed by Hiroshi Fujiwara, icon of streetwear culture.

Originally working with rolex designs and employing high-tech industrial steel hardening processes to create a more durable and unique watch, due to the blackened finish, the watches have gained notoriety within and beyond watch circles. Going one step further than a refinished case, Bamford allows you to customize the face, hands and anything else you have in mind. The boys have since started working with more than just Rolex and TAG Heuer, they are now using Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Tudor or any other brands you wish to work with.

Some more of their collection highlights below, check out Bamford for yourself here.

Apolis Activism Market Bag

Apolis Activism has a nice little option for those that want to get behind the brand and cause – supporting textile cooperatives in the developing world in an effort to kick-start a self-sustaining industry – in an affordable package. Manufactured in Saidpur, Bangladesh from 100% natural golden jute fiver harvested locally, subtle touches like a waterproof lining and vegetable dyed leather straps with antique nickel rivets round out this practical piece. I picked up the bundle of 3 that I plan on leaving in the trunk of the car for impromptu trips to the shops. Available here.

Norse Projects × Ally Capellino Fjell Rucksacks

The absolute best thing about the bags coming from Ally Capellino is that they’re built for life. Using materials that are meant to be worn, used and loved, all pieces feature very  little to no exterior branding. Capellino explains, “People should add something of themselves, so that the bags become theirs not mine” – words to live by. Straight from Shoreditch, East London, where her studio and boutique are both based comes a the Fjell Rucksack made especially for Scandinavian brand and shop Norse Projects. The bag is a classic hunting style, and is made from high quality British waxed cotton with bridle leather detailing. And though a little out of character for Capellino, the collaborative label is displayed prominently  on the front. Available here.

PARMIGIANI – BUGATTI SUPER SPORT

Considered the fastest watch in the world, last week Parmigiani released the new Bugatti Super Sport to coincide with the release of its namesake supercar. Making sure they spared no expense in making it as exotic and extreme, the watch contains the 372 movement – a successor to the 370 which worked using a transversal movement – the new watch features another extrodinary movement which transfers power to the watch face at a 90 degree angle. This first edition will be limited to 30 pieces, with white 18ct gold and carbon face, but varying models will be produced in the future, to a total of 200 pieces. At $259,000, it seems like a drop in the bucket after you’ve just spent as much as you have on your new Veyron.

John & Mary Carry-All Bags

One of the best things John & Mary’s handcrafted line up of bags is this quote from John Stuart Mill that governs their entire operation, “One must always act so as to produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people, within reason.” As a rule, they place the utmost importance on functionality and durability and marry it with classic aesthetics from their Los Angeles base. There, they work closely with a small family-owned local factory where production of the canvas-leather bags are handled. Available here.

Archival Clothing Rucksack

It seems fitting that these woven waxed twill rucksacks are being born out of Eugene, OR and Boulder, CO. Inspired by the traditional canoe pack, this one seems right at home in the outdoors. Since their launch in 2009, Archival has quietly been making some top quality pieces utilizing heavy weight waxed cotton twill, Horween Chromexcel leather, solid brass hardware, and military-grade cotton webbing. Trying to utilize as local manufacturing and sources, they take domestic offerings seriously – an effort “t0 help stimulate the domestic market and encourage US manufacturers to expand their offerings.” Here’s hoping you can help them with that. Available here.

Maison Martin Margiela Plaited Leather Belt

You definitely won’t find yourself wanting if you are currently looking for a braided belt.  They’re making the rounds right now in a lot of different shapes and sizes from multicolored to more standard country club fare from the likes of Ralph Lauren.  However, leave it to Martin Margiela to give us something different that is still totally wearable.  What makes his plaited (read: braided) belt stand out is the thickness of the three individual strips which, together with the heavy silver rectangular buckle, instantly gives it a fresh minimal look.  Plus, you can’t go wrong with the versatility of a good tan leather belt that will just look better and better with age.  Available here.
