Rolls Royce Ghost

For a company that previously wasn’t known for launching new models in regular intervals, the last couple of years have seen the luxury brand awaken from its usual slow pace with new models that have brought the brand into the 21st century. For its latest model, Rolls Royce is channeling the spirit of the classic Silver Ghost, a model that is widely considered to be the luxury marque’s first serious contender in the luxury car market.

The all-new Ghost model is based on the previously announce experimental 200EX and will be joining the brand’s Phantom lineup. Previously announced last November, the car’s performance specs have just been released. The Ghost is set to sport a brand new 563hp turbocharged 6.6L V12 engine with 575 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,500 rpm that is unique to RR. Obviously a V12 doesn’t scream low fuel consumption but I hardly think its a factor if you plan on picking one up. All those pony’s allow for a ridiculous 4.8 seconds to reach 60 mph and a top speed governed at 155mph. It gets a bit technical with the suspension features…suffice to say the car will have top line suspension and handling guaranteeing a smooth ride. Open the coach doors and you’re welcomed with luxurious wood paneling and hand stitched leather sofa seats and a huge two-panel sunroof.

Rolls-Royce Director of Engineering, Helmut Riedl said, “Rolls-Royce power is entirely different to anything else in the automotive world. It is delivered free from stress and exertion but at the same time must engage the driver. Ghost is about fingertip control while still enjoying a dynamic connection with the road. Equally passengers need to be cosseted from the physical sensations of acceleration, braking and cornering. Our chassis set up keeps Ghost stable and flat, preventing it from wallowing or pitching in the corners or imposing undesirable forces on those inside.”

So far the only pictures available are those of the four door model but there are plans for a coupe and convertible versions thus following the footsteps of the Phantom.

The new Ghost looks to continue RR’s tradition but we would have to say the only thing we would have liked to see different is the rectangular headlights, round lights would have done a better job of evoking the spirit and paying homage to the car’s history.

Keep your eyes peeled at the Frankfurt motor show in September where the new Ghost will be shown in full production trim. With a base price of £165,000 excluding taxes and delivery charges the first deliveries are scheduled to start at the end of 2009.

Here is the just released official promo video and some more snapshots of the car.
