//////////////////////WINNER//////////////////////

The Bruxe founders handpicked the winning entry (their reasons below), username: Labraji and the entry:

1. I recently moved into a single bedroom shared, loft bed, in Brooklyn, and I need a new bag to celebrate this life changing decision. The city is amazing, I’d rather be poor than living somewhere else. 2. Gray goes with anything, also reminds me of Sasha Grey. Check out her new latest movie, “The Girlfriend Effect.”

I have to give it to Labraji because he encompasses what Bruxe is about to us (Oli and I).  It’s about city-living first and what better city to live in than NYC! Secondly it’s about simplistic design such as the loft mentioned.  Last but not least it is about following your dreams with confidence.  The right location will inspire you to become who you are or need to be!  Living broke to follow your dream and reaching it is much better than being handed the world a a silver platter!  Trust me on this one. He’s also made me Google Sasha Grey and that made my afternoon.Hope you like it Labraji, and good luck with everything!

Moncler 2010 Winter Hat

Moncler Fall/Winter 2010 Winter Hat

With all the attention on Bruce Weber’s campaign for Moncler’s Fall 2009/Winter 2010 collection, few people have dropping thoughts on the actual collection. Now Moncler isn’t for everybody because not everybody can pull off the look of lacquered nyloned down in a bright color, but there are a few nice pieces like the knitted hat above and couture cardigan with a searsucker-like lining. We’re not normally one for massively logo’d out pieces, but the embroidered lettering feels like a part of the generic winter-design including reindeer and snowflakes, plus, who among us can resist the lure of a large pom-pom that screams childhood pond hockey? Available here.

Outlier Tailored Performance Clothing

I like to ride my bicycle.  I ride it to the corner store, the Pho shop, Home Hardware, and other reputable businesses.  One thing I don’t do is ride it to work for reasons known: sweat.  Unlike the effortless girls of Dundas, when I get hot, I can’t gun it and get some extra air conditioning afforded by the airstream of a buffeting skirt.  I’ve tried a few things: X-Acto knifing unnoticeable slits in my pants (sorry Bugle Boys), changing at work after a bird bath in the handicap washroom (potentially embarrassing), all to no avail, enter stage right – Outlier Tailored Performance Clothing.  Although I don’t completely buy the “bike to boardroom” motto, this NYC-made collection is extremely well cut and a lot of thought has gone into their design, selection of fabrics and textile purveyor.  The New Zealand sourced Swiss constructed merino is hydrophobic, hydrophilic, and most importantly odour-free.  In layman’s terms, it’s what you want.  I most likely won’t be making my fiscal 2010 projections to the execs in these, but I damn well will be wearing them in every other circumstance.  My money’s on the pale grey summer pants and according to their shipping options – 15 more sleeps! - Grimey

Editor’s Note: Grimey is a hesitant, beat reporter from T.O., if you like his words, show him some love with a comment and he may be persuaded to return.

INTERVIEW: JAKE DAVIS | DIRECTOR

“It’s amazing what sparse facial hair, clear lenses, and a trench coat can do for you. My whole shit  the last two months while  I was intensely working was to see how ugly I could look. Not regular ugly.  But dope ugly. Does that make any sense? (Picture via ACL)

There’s something to be said about being labeled a tastemaker. Hold up and think about what that title means. It means you lead and inspire. It means you impress. It means you deliver. For director Jake Davis, it means all that plus being tapped by Nike while studying at NYU’s film school to do a short showcasing Nike’s coolness, working with original NY tastemaker Chris Gibbs (now of Union LA) and then using all that as the launchpad for a career in filmmaking. Davis continues to be a frequent collaborator with Supreme and Nike when not working with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Nelly, T.I., or working on his feature film “Cool Hunter” inspired by his work with Nike. We caught up with him to talk about his city, the industry, and of course, style.

LH: What was the “a-ha!” moment for you in your life when you decided you wanted to be a director?

JD: I always had a strong passion for music and a visual eye. When I was about fifteen I thought a film director was the best of both of those worlds.

LH: What’s an average day like for you?

JD: The day to day of a director is actually quite solitary. A lot of time spent in your own head. If I’m not actually making a video (prepping, shooting, or editing) I’m coming up with ideas. Almost everyday I’m coming up with concepts and figuring out how to make them. I write treatments weekly and the videos develop from there. Everyday I try to create and inspire.

Burkman Bros Collection

autwin09_02

Describing themselves as real guys who like fashion but are just guys. Doug and Ben Burkman hit the ground running last year with their Asian inspired collection. The two brothers from Toronto have had great success as a team previously working for Gap Inc. honing their skills designing men’s casual wear. The pair take their inspiration from their extensive travels mostly because of freelance fashion design work. The brand’s aesthetic is classic outdoor preppy and has broad appeal but its also about the little touches that sets it apart. The brothers use small touches in their designs to punctuate the travel aspect of the brand. Hang-tags have an image of a Gurkha with “Brothers” written in Hindi. Some other quirky touches include Japanese labels and some pieces even have fake name tags sewn inside to imply they had a previous owner. Bringing the classic back into casual, that’s the Burkman Bros Collection right there.

COS Autumn/Winter 2009 Backpack

COS Autumn/Winter 2009 Backpack

We remember hearing about COS around Japanese brand circles for a little while now and much how like Visvim started making waves without many knowing additional information about them (they just launched an official Visvim website), COS is making a quiet push. Unlike some other Japanese counterparts, COS is based around affordable quality. However, that’s not to say it makes them more available, they’re still very hard to come by in shops. Despite some similarities in raw canvas materials with the Porter Sportive Rucksack we showed you earlier, this bag above is apparently very large in comparison but still perfect for Fall and flannel.

SuperHeadz-Plamodel-DIY-35mm-Camera

Even though the wackness to dopeness ratio is high at Urban Outfitters, there is a neat random product floating around every now and again. Not always practical or necessary, but always fun nonetheless. The DIY (Do it yourself!) 35mm flash-less camera by Plamodel means you get an art project and a camera, all in one. Camera parts come separated, and it’s your job to snap them all together to create a sleek, functional 35mm camera. Assembly takes a couple of hours and simple instructions are included. Modifications are easy (to create a completely unique camera!); wide angle 28 mm lens takes rich, perfectly imperfect photos. 35mm film.  Includes: Assembly kit in vinyl bag, wrist strap and screw driver. Available here.

Vans 106 Vulcanized Sneakers

Vans 106 Vulcanized Sneakers

Everybody has a favorite shoe for the summer, from the boater to Chuck’s, but for us the KED’s are classic, perfect with shorts, affordable, easy to keep clean, which is why we like the Vans 106. Perfectly skinny, with a rounded toe, in two hot color options with fresh white rubber and stitching. We peeped the new colorways of the surfer-inspired, hemp, Vans 106 SF over at Nice Kicks earlier this summer, and now there’s word they’ll drop an updated version of the 106 later this summer. While there’s many out there trying to position themselves as ‘summer shoes’, Vans has done something they are not, making them spefically to be worn without socks with an eco-friendly bamboo lining that absorbs moisture. Colorways will include purple, green, navy blue and black. Available now at Flauge.
