There are a plethora of great sunglass choices these days, but the obvious style du jour is the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer, seen on everybody from hipsters to Pharrell. It affords the wide faced folk a meticulous yet jaded look, the slender faced a jolly yet glib look and the in between, a breath of ironic wasp attitude. Point being, they are transcendent, and in this instance complacent. Everyone and their baby mama’s mama’s can sport them and look good; like a fresh pair of Hanes’ tube socks. Fighting through the wreckage I came across a pair of Reuben Tishkoff inspired sunglasses which reeked of old money, accumulated through suspect dealings and/or decades of nepotism. As sleazy as I looked in that particular pair, I loved the weight, the feel, and the originality. Oliver Goldsmith has been around since 1926 producing handmade, bespoke sunspecs for the fortunate and formidable from mother England. I can’t tell you when or why they ceased production but I can tell you that under the watchful eye of Claire Goldsmith, the granddaughter of Mr. Goldsmith, they are back and a savior for our homogenous looking streets. I can’t say that I look appropriately safe and good in these (above) but as Mr. Goldsmith says “If you find a shape you like, have it”. If you’re of the name dropping variety, Oliver Goldsmith has been outfitting 20th Century icons for the last half century, everybody from Grace Kelly, Michael Caine, Audrey Hepburn, John Lennon, along with iconic style makers, Givenchy, Dior, Vidal Sassoon.
