Shepard Fairey lends his hand in helping recreate one of the most important musical events in history, creating the covers for the limited edition 2 Volume Boxed set “Woodstock Experience”. Produced in association with Woodstock co-creator Michael Lang, the set is limited to 1,000 numbered and signed copies. Similar to his work on a couple Orwellian classics -2 of my personal favorite books, Fairey essentially captures the essence of the festival; using a god-like iconic image of Hendrix for the front cover. The contents of this set are indeed impressive; the first volume consists of behind-the-scenes images capturing the events that transpired over those 3 days in a field in Bethel, New York. The second volume is even more intriguing, 106 pages of never before seen photographs by Dan Garson, a wide-eyed 17 year old kid invited to cover the event for his high school newspaper. Whether or not this kid knew he was capturing such a historic event on film is unknown, but he must’ve been pretty impressed with the music, and wild free-love atmosphere which permeated the festival goers. Over 65 artists, Woodstock performers, writers and designers also share their personal experience throughout the set, from cultural, social, political standpoints to chronicle the changes that came out of this monumental event.
Also included with the books, are a 7″-vinyl pressing, original fine art prints, specially written essays, Michael Lang’s own hand-drawn site map, an authentic vintage Woodstock ticket and an unused event pass preserved since 1969. Hippie or not, this limited edition boxed set is not only a great collectors item but a window to a time when a 3-day event could forever change the music, minds, and imaginations of a generation 40 years ago.
