Yes, Pet Shop Boys | Designed by Farrow

Pet Shop Boys. I know. Not really my thing either. But the packaging of their vinyl album “Yes, Pet Shop Boys” featuring the art of Farrow is just too fresh. It sets the bar high and above Kaws’ work for Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak in my opinion. Nobody really buys CD’s anymore, let alone vinyl, so you really have to appreciate the thought that went into this. Described to be their most ‘pop album’, they decided to go bright and colorful. The limited edition vinyl version of the album was produced by the The Vinyl Factory and features eleven tracks split over eleven separate records each in a coloured sleeve and housed in a smoked, handmade Perspex case! There are only 300 copies of the box set worldwide and one will cost you about $600. Visit thevinylfactory.com for full details and to order a copy.

Takashi Murakami x Pharrell x Jacob & Co. Sculpture

Takashi Murakami x Pharrell Williams x Jacob & Co Sculpture

Finally, the BBC/Ice Cream Blog has shared pictures on a project we heard about awhile back, the Takashi Murakami x Pharrell Williams x Jacob & Co. sculpture. Unveiled today at the opening of the Art Basel fair in Switzerland, the piece “The Simple Things” apparently sold in less than half an hour (my money is on Nigo). Jacob The Jeweller has obviously been getting busy in jail. In addition to Jacob’s take on Pharrell’s favorite products such as Pepsi, Ice Cream sneakers, Ketchup, a cupcake, Doritos, and something that looks like a condom and bottle of lotion, Murakami created the sculpture for the objects to sit inside its mouth. Currently on display at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, the same place Pharrell unveiled his limited series of chairs back in the Fall.

Quiksilver’s Limited Collection – Summer/Fall 09

c309505lennywnefront1

Quicksilver has been a mass market brand for quite some time now, but its not commonly known that it also has a premium, Limited Collection that has new releases every season. The first Limited Collection, which featured a collaboration with DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material) and Hardy Blechman of Maharishi, debuted in Spring 2007. Since that time, the line has evolved and taken on different sources of inspiration. So let’s talk Summer/Fall (yes FALL!!) collection that is hitting stores as you are reading this.  This season’s collection has a sophisticated, minimalist aesthetic that fuses nautical and military influences.  Design inspiration is also drawn from the archives of Quiksilver’s rich surf heritage, specifically from the art of legendary Quiksilver artist, Simon Buttonshaw and his “Tom-Tom” print.  They’re also leading the board short innovation with an embossed diamond-patterned material that eliminates chafing, is ultra lightweight, has the perfect amount of stretch and dries 2x faster. The Summer/Fall 2009 Collection will have limited distribution to retailers such as American Rag, Ron Herman, Lizard Lounge, Blue Bee, and Jack’s on Chestnut.

Hit the jump to see the rest of the collection.

Porter x MUG 820d Nylon Ruck Sack Backpack

Porter x MUG Backpack

Our friends over at SlamXHype have a great look at this new collaboration between Porter and MUG on this 820d Nylon Ruck Sack. I wasn’t really familiar with MUG until fairly recently, but after some research, they have some really nice things going on in terms of bags. Aside from the one up top, they make a really nice Helmet Bag. So MUG is all about creating quality products that are functional for everyday use, which we’ve heard from other brands before, so if you don’t buy it, MUG also did a BE@RBRICK toy you can check out after the jump.  In any case, I really like the mix of the mountaineering style synonymous with MUG with Porter’s signature quality and materials. Available at ARKnets.

Alife Rivington Club x Asics Sneakers | Summer 2009

alife-rivington-club-asics-summer-2009-2

I’m not really sure who I’m more impressed with in terms of resurgence in the past few years, Asics or New Balance. My favorites from Asics have been the Asics x LaMJC, Asics x Sold Out, Asics x Patta and recent Asics x Getry we featured. This works out well for us in a blogosphere kind of way that this collaboration just happens to follow up on Alife Rivington Club (ARC) manager Jesse Villanueva‘s feature in the New York Times. Yet again, ARC has gotten together with Asics to collaborate on two new sneakers in new colorways for Summer 2009. The sneakers feature suede/mesh uppers and just like the previous collaboration between the two, a subtle ARC tag logo on the side. To be released later this year.

See my other favorite Asics collaborations after the jump.

FreshJive x Trevor Paglen

You  can say that every artist has a story behind what he creates and I’m particularly intrigued by Trevor Palgen‘s new shirt and cap designs being offered at FreshJive. The art featured on the gear is taken from classified Pentagon Black Operations patches from the recent book, “I Could Tell You but Then You Would Have to Be Destroyed by Me”, referring to the hidden reality behind the Pentagon’s classified “black” budget which provides billions in dollars to supposed stealth government projects.

Trevor Paglen is an artist, writer, and experimental geographer. He has managed to document some of this hidden world in the form of patches he’s collected from touring bases, noting what some of the personnel wore, joining alumni associations, interviewing active and former team members, talking to base historians, and filing requests under the Freedom of Information Act.

What’s really interesting is how Trevor got into this – Vice President Dick Cheney’s comments after the WTC attack on Meet the Press when he said that the U.S. would engage its “dark side” to find the attackers. These patches have never been shown to the public before. Check out the different pieces after the jump.

Happy Socks

Happy Socks

I’ve professed my love for fancy socks on here in the past but I was recently reminded that my love has gone full fatal attraction. I can’t leave the house any longer unless my socks match my shirt. If I don’t have the right socks, I go sockless and with my Sebago or Sperry’s. Nobody makes better socks right now than our friends over at Happy Socks. There simply isn’t a better way to start your day than putting on a fresh pair of Happy Socks, I mean, they have happy right in the name (what kind of day do you think you’ll have?) They’ve got a huge selection, all conveniently broken down on the site  – everything from stripe and argyle to five color, and now a couple new Optic-3D versions featuring some Escher inspired work. As a testament to their reliability, Happy Socks are manufactured by the good folks that have been making socks for the Belgian and Turkish armies. Keep your toes happy.

Fixed Gear London & Paris

Here’s some inspiration for the weekend, I thought the video after the jump was pretty interesting since the guys are still refining their skills, but the biking, music and scenery keeps the video compelling. So this weekend, grab a fixie and get out there, and if you don’t yet have a fixie, watch this space, we have a little something in the works.

Thanks to Vincent for finding these videos.
